Picture the moment. I’m just back from two weeks holiday luxuriating in sun, sea, family and reading, reading, reading. A text arrives asking if I’d come on BBC Radio 4 Today programme to talk about gender pay and work.

I write on an evening spent with my 77 year old mother in hospital where she's recovering from a stroke. Yesterday when I visited she was furious. A nurse had said to her she might never get back the full use of her right arm.

Apparently there's an issue with women being heard at board meetings. They need to find ways to get their voice heard'. So said my husband over a cup of tea after reading the latest research on why there aren't more women on boards.
